Shedding light on a little history

William F. Dielschneider House is located on the corner of NE 6th & Cowls streets in historic downtown McMinnville, Oregon – 45 minutes SW of Portland, 30 minutes NW of the capitol city of Salem and 60 minutes from the Oregon Coast. McMinnville was first incorporated as a town in 1876. It later was incorporated as a city in 1882 and was made the county seat in 1887.

Twenty-five years before McMinnville was founded, Arnold Dielschneider, William's father, decided to leave St. Louis, Missouri to head west. He became one of the earliest pioneers to settle in this area. “I came here in the mid 1850's and after some time went into business in McMinnville in a general store,” his personal diary disclosed.

In 1892, William F. Dielschneider, Arnold's son, purchased a jewelry store located at the corners of 6th and Baker in McMinnville. In the fall of 1892, William formed a partnership with his brother, Franz. They moved the business to the new Campbell Building located on 3rd Street, three blocks away from the Carriage House. Their father, Arnold, joined his two boys and opened a shoe store in the same structure.

The William F. Dielschneider House was constructed in 1905. It had an assessed value of a staggering $1900! According to the Historic Resources Survey of McMinnville, the contractor was listed as unknown.

William F. and his wife, Winnifred, raised three children — Audrey, who died in 1983, Aileen, who died June 28, 2002 at the age of 101 and William N., who was born July 25, 1907 two years after the house was built and died November 9, 1998 at age 91. William F. Dielschneider died December 30, 1953.

The Bed & Breakfast Suite was originally used as a stable to provide for a horse and carriage. When remodeled in 1977 there were still two bales of hay upstairs in what is now the open loft bedroom!

The same year the Dielschneider House was built, so was the historic Elberton Hotel.  Later named the Oregon Hotel, now known as McMenamins, it is located three blocks away at the corner of 3rd and Evans.

Also within short walking distance are several shops, boutiques and delightful places to dine along Baker Street and throughout the revitalized McMinnville Downtown Historic District.
