Breed Information

The Bernese is a large working breed that was developed from dogs found in the countryside around Bern, Switzerland. The farmers primarily bred them as cattle drovers and cart pullers.

The Berner's personality varies, but they are most always gentle, calm, affectionate and faithful. Most are instinctively gentle with children and other animals. Some may be reserved around strangers.

Berners are NOT suited for solitary existence! They must be a member of the family. They are NOT heat tolerant. They are NOT suitable as a jogging partner! They do shed. They have a dry mouth (do not drool). They can do well in the city with moderate exercise provided.

The life span of the Bernese is best described by the Swiss expression: "Three years a young dog, three years a good dog, three years an old dog. All else is a gift from God!"
