Our Trip Down South

(Danny)

We recently came back from a trip to Arizona. We saw my family, went to a wedding of my college roommate and visited Out of Africa and the Grand Canyon. Here are two pictures:

Rest and Relaxation

(Danny)

We were able to get away over the fourth. The neat thing we did was visit a lava cave. It is in eastern Oregon and is a mile long. The kids all brought their flashlight lanterns and we went in. The temperature is around 45 degrees year around. The hard part of the journey was being deep in the cave with a bunch of tired children.

T-Ball is over

(Danny)

Well the sports season is over for us. This is the last year of one field and only two nights a week. John will be moving up to baseball next year and Mary may be able to do softball (we will have to practice more this summer). Joey will be doing T-ball again. The games were a little to long for him. By the third or fourth inning he was laying down in the field and enjoying picking the weeds.

New things in the garden

(Danny)

We like to try new things out each year. This year, we got a tree dahlia. We have always had lots of dahlias (over 100 varieties at one time but the weather got a lot of them last year). However, we had never even heard of a tree dahlia before this year. I guess they can grow to 10 or 12 feet tall. We don't really know what we are getting into with this one but it should be interesting. We are trying some new varieties of honeydew and corn. The seed catalogues made them sound really great so we thought we would try them out.

The greenhouse is almost empty. We grew more flowers than we normally do this year. Salpoglosis plants are back after a few years of not growing them. My peanuts didn't sprout this year. They never really did very good up here anyway. It isn't quite hot enough for them. They only produced very small peanuts.

T-Ball

(Danny)

This is our last week of T-ball. The three oldest are all playing. It is the first year for Joey and Mary. Mary is old enough but Joey really isn't. However, due to a small number of people signing up, there were extra spots so he gets to play. But by the fourth inning each week you can see why they don't want the younger kids. He loses focus on the game and sits down and stuff like that. But all of them are getting much better at the game. They have a good coach that is teaching them many of the things that I can't get through to them.

Snow is gone.

(Danny)

We saw something this week that hasn't been seen around here in March since 1955: SNOW. We only get snow 1 to 2 times a year where we live and it normally goes away pretty quickly. We didn't get much at our house (about .5 inches maybe) but it was enough for the kids to have a blast.

Spring is in the Air

(Danny)

Might as well cover all the topics today. We planted some stuff in the greenhouse about a week and a half ago. The radishes and turnips are up. Plus, I was able to till the garden. This is actually quite early for us and a surprise. In late December and January we had about 20 inches of rain in 5 weeks. Water was everywhere. But we have dried out and gardening has begun.

I also I had a good spring for spraying the fruit trees. It should be a bumper crop this year since we had problems last year with the late, wet spring.

We are so excited!

(Danny)

We have had a breakthrough! Anthony is getting close to being potty trained. He is only three months beyond his second birthday and there is definite progress being made. This is the earliest that we have had one out of diapers. We knew that he could sit on the potty chair but didn't want to sit there. So stage one was to get him to sit down. This involved some crying but we got beyond that. Just being consistant was the key (oh, and a little candy also helped). Stage two was getting him to use it. We quickly instituted the ice cream rule where if he used the chair, he would get some ice cream. Stage three is where he figures out before he needs to go and doesn't rely on the parents to take him there every hour. We will be finished when he is to that point.

While we are talking about Anthony, he watched a video on Monster Trucks last night. So today, Jeannine saw him lining up some of his small cars and then with a larger truck running over them like the Monster Trucks do! I wish I could have seen it. That's what happens when I go to work all day. I miss out on the good things.

One month until Lent starts

(Danny)

We have a later start to Lent this year with Ash Wednesday coming on March 1st. We are also down to 6 weeks until Angela's due date. She is moving around lots.

Updates

(Danny)

For all of you that have been awaiting new pictures, there are more available now. Be sure to hold your mouse over the picture to get a very brief description of what the picture is. It is just a random selection from the last 4 months. Yes, it has been that long since I last downloaded pictures from the camera. But I need to clean up space for taking pictures at the hospital so I figured now was as good a time as any.

Back On Line

(Danny)

There was a break in the content due to a problem with my provider that hosts this page. Though I didn't get many details, they moved to a different computer and needed to reset accounts. However, they didn't bother to notify me ahead of time so I could prepare. I don't know if it was an anticapated outage or not.

There are no new pictures yet. I had a second request but I have not downloaded pictures from the camera recently!

Anthony

(Danny)

It was a long time coming but Anthony has started talking! Not full sentences or anything yet but he has spent so long choosing not to say anything and now there are a couple of new words everyday. Today it was dough and purple. It is amazing to see him grow up like this.

Blogging Random Thoughts

(Danny)

According to general blogging "rules", the people posting should do it routinely so that there is something new to read every time someone comes to visit. I am not doing very good with that. Sorry.

A reader writes: "I would like to see more pictures of your kids. There are so few of them." The reader continues, "And there are so many things on the Catholic faith. How about some more on the kids or school or other things. And you have nowhere to type in comments."

Ok, for the Catholic stuff, that is true but I have no plans on changing. That is an important part of my life (and the life of the family) so it is going to be a part of everything I write. As for the pictures, I have only 20MB of space with the hoster (is that a word?) of this page so I am limited on how many pictures I can put. However, I can put more so the next time I download pictures from the camera, I will update and add to the pictures page.

What I really need are guest bloggers. But at this point, since I just am writing in the code itself (because I don't have any special software which is why there is no space for comments) it kind of limits who can blog. I have tried to get the wife or the kids to comment (I even offered to do the typing) but it was a no go. So for now you are just stuck with me. :)

Comments can be sent by email at any time.

Our Little Artist

(Danny)

We also have a budding artist in the family. Mary recently won a coloring contest at the local John Deere store. Ok, so she didn't draw the picture herself but her coloring skills must be pretty good for her age to win the top prize!

2 year olds

(Danny)

I enjoy the two year old stage a lot. It is just a fun stage. The child is learning so much, trying new things, thinks dads are the best thing in the world. Anthony is a slow talker. We probably have a good 7 words down consistantly right now. But it is fun to work with him as he tries to say more and more. He just loves to go read, draw and play toys. Most of the time he is very happy. I know a lot of people have a hard time with the two year old phase as they start to push back on the parents to get their space. But they are such a marvel.

There is not much else to write about currently. Jeannine is doing ok (though tired out from what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend at the beach with only Angela with her while I had the other 4).

What a fluke

(Danny)

Now we have had the experience of a kid with a broken bone! John took a dive off of his bunk bed and broke his arm. It will mend but it has kept things exciting for us.

What's Going On Here?

(Danny)

At this point I just have a collection of links to websites that contain information that I think is important. We are a Catholic family that is striving to love God and be faithful to him in our daily lives. That means that we are deeply involved in the Church established by Christ (check your history books). So you will see a lot of links to sites with information about Church teaching, apologetics, etc. I may eventually put some of my own stuff up here but we will have to see.
